Onboarding a new team member
What happens in the week before someone joins a project, and who is responsible for each step.
Owner: HR Executive · Last reviewed: · Next review: 28 April 2027
Onboarding makes sure a new person has what they need to work well from the first day. The Project Manager is responsible, and the Tech Lead is consulted on technical setup.
What is prepared
- An onboarding task is created about a week before the person joins, with a checklist
- Product overview, project background and the project's way of working
- The development, design or quality way of working, depending on the role
- Access to team communication, documents and the team cadence
- For developers: development environment, source code, build and release platform, cloud and secure network access
The task is closed when the checklist is complete and the person is working with the team. People who split time across two projects agree a working pattern and share it with both project managers, and log hours daily so overload shows early.
